כתוב את תגובתך Write your response Normal Text Title Subtitle Normal Text SUBMIT או לחץ על תיבה כדי לשלוח (n)... • Hanukkah 2024 | Global Beit Midrash

Hanukkah Back to Holidays Homepage From Colegio Olamí Interviews with students QUESTIONS: What do you do for Hanukkah? What dishes do you cook? Do you celebrate each day of Hanukkah? What does Hanukkah mean to you? From Milken This year, Christmas and Hanukkah overlap. Below is a set of images. Choose one of the images and briefly talk about what it means to you. How do you feel about the image? How do you relate to it? Which of these items would you wear or use? How do you relate to the images to the right? Chanukah lamps must be lit at sunset—neither later nor earlier. If one forgets or deliberately fails to light the lamp at sunset, he may light it up to the time when people cease to walk about in the street. One should place the Chanukah lamp over the door of his house, on the outside… the Mezuzah being on the right and the Chanukkah lamp being on the left. In times of danger, one may place the Chanukah lamp inside the house—it is even enough to place it on the table. Discussion questions: Why is Maimonides saying to light the Chanukiah so others can see it? Who does he want to see the Chanukiah? What is the point of lighting Chanukah candles in the public space? Should Jews light Chanukiot in the public space? Why or why not? Would you be proud or scared to light your Chanukiah in a public space? Would you place your Chanukiah in front of your house? In the window? In your college dorm room? What should Jews be advertising to others about Judaism? Which Jewish practices or ideas would you want to share with others–Jews or non-Jews?

And God (Elohim) said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. 27. So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female He created them. 28. And God blessed them, and God said to them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth. Genesis, Chapter 2 7. And the Lord God (Adonay Elohim) formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. 8. And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 15. And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to tend it and to guard it. 18. Bal Tashchit Devarim 20:19-20 When in your war against a city you have to besiege it for a long time in order to capture it, you must not destroy its trees, wielding the ax against them. You may eat of them, but you must not cut them down. Are trees of the field human to withdraw before you into the besieged city? Mishneh Torah, Laws of Kings 6:8-10 Halakhah 8 We should not cut down fruit trees outside a city nor prevent an irrigation ditch from bringing water to them so that they dry up, as Deuteronomy 20:19 states: 'Do not destroy its trees.' And not only during a siege: Rather, in any situation, anyone who cuts down a fruit tree destructively is punished. But we may cut it down if it harms other trees, or because it damages someone else’s field, or because it is highly valuable. The Torah forbids only in a destructive manner. Halakhah 10 And not only trees: Rather, anyone who smashes utensils, or tears clothing, or destroys a building, or stops up a well, or wastes food in a destructive manner -- violates bal taschit. • Rosh Hashana 5786 | Global Beit Midrash

Rosh Hashana 5786 How do people change? Amongst the steps of Teshuvah (turning, repentance, repair) are the following elements: Awareness of what a person has done wrong Regret Acknowledgement/Confession Sincerely trying to repair one’s relationships with others, oneself, and God Watch the following videos, which major companies created to restore public trust. Link to video Link to video Link to video Additional Discussion Questions Download these questions here as a one-page document to share at your Rosh Hashanah meals. Adapted from Michael Rosenak’s telling (based on Midrash Tanchuma) in Roads to the Palace . Before a person is born, all of their characteristics are determined, except for the idea of whether they will be righteous or wicked. Questions: To what extent do you think our fate is determined? Do you agree with this text's ultimate question: "Did you live a life which was righteous or wicked?" What do you think the ultimate question is? Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik, Halakhic Man (1903-1993) The most fundamental principle of all is that man must create himself. It is this idea that Judaism introduced into the world… Repentance (Teshuvah), according to the halakhic view, is an act of creation—self-creation. Questions: Do you believe that we create ourselves? In what ways is this teaching true or not true? Shai Held, The Heart of Torah (born 1971) For all its centrality in Jewish thought and spirituality, change is extremely—and sometimes excruciatingly—hard to achieve. The Israelites trek through the desert and end up… right where they started. Numbers reminds us that “one can take the people out of Egypt, but it proves [far] more difficult to take Egypt out of the people.” Questions: What makes Teshuvah, or change, so difficult? In your experience, how much do you think people can really change?
